It might be funny to think back and try to recall when and what were the first vinyl records we proudly could call our own. In my case, it was the Xmas of 1971 and mum bought me "20 Solid Hits Volume 2" (one of those K-Tel type TV promos). And I didn't even have a record player at the time to play it (that came 6 months later on my birthday). I also recall the first records I laid down my own money for - three Top 40 singles: "Too Young To Be Married" by the Hollies, "I Don't Know How To Love Him" by Helen Reddy and "Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted" by the Partridge Family....

Please feel free to cast your mind back too....

I have no idea what the first record anyone ever purchased for me but I can remember the first one I purchased. It was Adam Ant's "Prince Charming." I'm pretty sure my first record purchased for me was some novelty record like "Monster Mash."

Believe it or not, in the sixties, Glen Campbell had a TV show called the Goodtime Hour. I loved that show and watched it every Wednesday nite. So, my first record album that I purchased was a Glen Campbell one. I still have it, along with all my other vinyls......I dont have a player anymore, though.....Maybe I will hang some covers on my walls.

sadly, embarassingly ... The Captain and Tenille "love will keep us together"
d'oh! there goes all my indie/alt/punk cred right out the window ... heh heh.

what's worse is i bought it at Woolworths. and still remember to this day buying it (it was 1976 or 1977... ack!) because my mum was pissed off about me buying *anything* phonographic. but yet a few months later, we ended up buying a parody 45RPM of "In the Mood" by The Henhouse Five Plus Two.

    end confession...

My first record was a 45 which came with a Spiderman comic book. The record told the story in the comic book. I was four years old when I got this and still have it. Miraculously it is still playable. My first rock record was the Steve Miller Band single for swing town (I couldn't afford the whole album) and I have that too and yup its still playable and is almost mint. As far as an LP it was Kiss' album 'Love Gun' which my parents made me get rid of because the cover objectified women. I learned my lesson, so when I came home with the first Sex Pistols album and the first Fear album I hid these away and made cassettes to listen to. That way I could always claim "A friend got it for me."

      Hey Chris,
Don't feel embarassed by that - as I said, one of my first was by the Partridge Family - I'm sure I lost a few friends at school over that little decision.

I bet if you polled some of the indie/alt/punk artists on what music they grew up with, you'd find a few interesting additions even with them - maybe Siouxsie of the Banshees wouldn't like to admit to The Sound Of Music or Camelot way back when....

Henhouse 5 Plus 2 - long live Ray Stevens....

My first ever record I bought was in 1984 Depeche Mode's 12" remix "People Are People". I was hooked on 12" remixes ever since. And recently I have sold many cds and bought the album on vinyl because I like the sounds much better.

Hey Reel, cool to have your local store in a movie!
Wall Of Voodoo - now there's a memory jogger! Their lead singer Stan Ridgway put out an excellent spooky song called "Camouflage"....

The first Album I ever bought was Men Without Hats. Ugh. I still have it. LOL The second one was MC Shan like 2 days later. waayyyyyy back in the day. I think I was like 11 years old. But I had tons of other albums that belonged to my older sister and parents. I inherited all of these albums and still own all of them today. None of them listen to Vinyl anymore nor do they have players.

A number 1 gold hits, by Elvis, printed in Mexico, with spanish on the back. I found it at a thrift store for a buck, and even since
I didn't have a record player or ever thought about collecting records, it was so cool it got me collecting records.

      Hmmmmm, what's "SPANISH" ???

ok... fine.. it was WRITTEN in spanish, meaning for the average mexican consumer of the 1970's. Like the
hundreds of "gold hits" produced in mass once an exsisting artist has proved to be able to sell records. Thus
the record maker was hired by Elvis's record company to turn out cheap knock offs for other countries and in this case
it was mexico, thus in Spanish.
